#93 – Check!

93.  Take a painting class from Doug Braithwaite -   completed 9.21-26.2009

I first learned about Doug Braithwaite through the Studio Group and the Plein Air painting competition in Helper, UT. I immediately fell in love with Doug’s clean style. Each stroke is expressive, full of energy and life.

For over six years I wanted to take a painting class from Doug, but always had a schedule conflict when an opportunity arose. I finally got that chance.

The workshop was held in Helper, a small, historic mining town that has increasingly become a home for many artists. The area surrounding Helper has beautiful bluffs and forests of aspen and pine trees within a short drive of Main Street. I have had the opportunity to take several classes in the area and have grown as an artist each time.

The first session of the first day of the workshop we focused on under painting. Doug demoed his techniques and the the entire class set off to attempt what we had just learned.

This was my under painting. Throughout the class, I found I was drawn to trees in the landscape.

We had a couple sessions each day. Here are some of the other paintings I started (but did not finish) during the workshop:

It felt great to paint again. It was relaxing and refreshing to be in nature enjoying the warm sunshine, gentle breeze and beauty of the landscape.

Doug is a great artist and teacher. He balances demoing with plenty of one on one help. If you are looking at getting into landscape painting or learn new techniques, I definitely recommend taking a class from Doug.

Doug is actually teaching five workshops this year; click here for more information.

Wow! Fabulous work!

Aaron and I drive through Helper every time we go visit his fam. I love how everything is called “Balanced Rock”… I hope that rock doesn’t fall… the city will fail!!!
